Mary and Her Media
One of my early art instructors told us to always use the best materials - even when starting out and just practicing. I took her advice then and still do. My watercolor paints are made by Winsor Newton. The metallics I use are made by Daniel Smith and they are sprayed with a fixative that keeps them from tarnishing. I paint on 300 lb. Arches acid free watercolor paper. I use acid free Japanese papers for my mixed media paintings. All mats and frames custom made. Matboards are acid free and frames are ordered from leading frame makers.
I have been painting most of my life and involved with art in one form or another. I didn't start marketing my work until my 55th birthday when I figured I only had another 55 years to become famous.
I have taken instruction in silk screen printing, stained glass, wood carving, oil and acrylic painting, art appreciation and some crafts. I found other forms of art interesting but when I painted my first watercolor I WAS HOOKED. I love watercolor for its own sake - the paints move and blend and create shapes. The transparancy adds magic to the creation. When sitting in my studio wondering what the next painting will be - I don't look to pictures for inspiration. I simply wet my paper - add a little pigment - watch it spread - and go from there. What I end up with is a work formed from my spirit and brought together by my experience with the medium.
When I see something really beautiful - I cry. I hope that someday my work will pull from the viewer that deep feeling of awe. If the viewer cries I'll be happy.
