Spirit of Tao Te Ching

Spirit of Tao Te Ching
by Jeff Rasmussen
ISBN 097078409

Some 2,500 years ago Lao Tzu packed his yak and rode off into China's wild frontier, never to be seen again. Before he left, however, this legendary sage wrote the Tao Te Ching (the Book of the Way and its Virtue). Second to the Bible, this classic text is the most translated book in the world. In its 81 verses it gives us simple truths about peace, joy and harmony; and practical wisdom for life, work and relationships. This book has influenced the lives of millions with a universal message that transcends culture and time.

Jeff Rasmussen has authored Spirit of Tao Te Ching

This poetic rendering of the Tao Te Ching weaves in literary allusions from medieval mystic Julian of Norwich, the Aztec poet-king Ixtlilxochitl, painter Paul Klee, songwriters Gilbert and Sullivan, poets TS Eliot and Stephen Vincent Benét, and others.

The book is the first part of a multimedia trilogy called Tao Te Ching: the book, the song, the miniseries. The song Tao Ke Tao Fei Chang Tao (Spoken Tao is not Eternal Tao) will be available as a free ancillary of the book. The miniseries I'm not a Taoist, But I Play one in Life is slated for release this winter.

Author biography: Jeff Rasmussen is a professor at Purdue University Indianapolis. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from University of Wisconsin, Madison; and later received a doctorate from Tulane University. Rasmussen has authored a multimedia cdrom on the Tao Te Ching, written a Guidebook to the Tao Te Ching, taught a course at Purdue called Zen, Tao and Psychology and developed a website "Images of Taoism." The website has won many awards including Encyclopædia Britannica's "Web's Best Sites" rating. It is rated as one of the best Taoism sites in terms of user popularity, with over 4,000 unique visitors per month. He has led a bimonthly "Zen Tao" spirituality group for the last 5 years.

Reviewers comments:

"...It is with more reading that a piece develops and lingers in the mind, asking and showing more. And that's what I'm also discovering with [Spirit of Tao Te Ching], though verses 4, 66, 68, and 70 leapt from the page for me with my first reading. [The] preface is wonderful... in that it helped me to better understand the language Tao Te Ching was originally written."
 -C. Speakman

"A wonderful addition to the library of anyone interested in the Tao."
-Po-Han Lin, owner of Daoism Depot--the biggest most active Internet Daoism site

"With his lyrical approach to the Tao Te Ching, Rasmussen has captured the unencumbered essence of Lao Tzu. He has produced poetry, too often sacrificed by others in the name of literary accuracy. I commend his contribution."
-David G. Jones, author of a new edition of Sun Tzu's Art of War entitled "Winning Engagements"

"This is a lucid and easily accessible translation. It is a sharply-observed and fluidly poetic rendering of one of the world's classic texts."
-Christopher Stokes, St. Peter's College, Oxford University

"I really like the fact that this translation places more emphasis upon imagery and tone than punctuation and syntax. Too frequently, translations lose something in the move to the subject/verb/object format of English. Much of this translation stands out for that, and is an interesting bridge for those just beginning to see the genius of the ambiguity inherent in the original Chinese."
 -K.A. Lee

"A wonderful rendition of the spirit behind the Tao Te Ching."
-Stephen Joseph, Assistant Dean Butler County Community College

"Some translations are more equal than others. Jeff Rasmussen has written a rendering rather than a strict and direct translation of the famous Tao te ching that succeeds in capturing its heart and spirit. His choice to use shorter verses, more in keeping with the original, helps to eliminate the conflation of interpretation and translation and the distracting repetitiveness in some other translations. The Tao truly cannot be spoken, but because Dr. Rasmussen seems to understand this, his version helps to at least give us a glimpse of the ineffable. I highly recommend this book."
