Book Review - The Introvert Advantage: How to Thrive in an Extrovert World

The Introvert Advantage: How to Thrive in an Extrovert World by Marti Olsen Laney, Psy.D. ISBN 0761123695I first saw this wonderful book, The Introvert Advantage in a book club listing, and ordered it right away. I'd never seen a book written for introverts, and, being one, never thought of it having any advantages! Long maligned in our extrovert society, we introverts often develop low self-esteem and feel out-of touch with mainstream society. We generally prefer being alone or in small groups, with less stimulating activities than the extroverts. The Introvert Advantage explains why, and furthermore, shows how to live a more fulfilling life as an "innie".

The author, Marti Olsen Laney, Psy.D., differentiates between introversion, a type of temprament, and shyness, a social disorder. Like many people, I thought they were one and the same. Not so. Dr. Laney explains that the main distinction between intorverts and extroverts is how they "recharge their batteries": introverts in quiet time, extroverts in more stimulating pursuits. So the very activities that energize an extrovert deplete an introvert, and the introvert's quiet times can deplete (bore to tears) an extrovert. The Introvert Advantage is about how to attain balance, for introverts in their own lives, and within introvert-extrovert relationships.

Written in layman's language, this book is both informative and easy to digest. For most introverts, it is a real eye-opener, explaining to them things they never understood, or misunderstood, about themselves. It describes the genetic differences between introverts and extroverts, and the diverse neural pathways and use of neurotransmitters in their brains. And it tells of the important role introverts play in society, how their introspective deep thinking helps keep us from plunging headlong into danger or disaster.

I highly recommend this book to all introverts, to those who know and love them, and for all who care about the health of our society.
