NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP)

What is NLP?

"NLP presents specific tools which can be applied effectively in any human interaction. It offers specific techniques by which a prectitioner may usefully organize and re-organize his or her subjective experience or the experiences of a client in order to define and subsequently secure any behavioral outcome."
- Leslie Cameron-Bandler, NLP Textbook

OK, What is NLP Really?

NeuroLinguistic Programming is an ever-growing set of tools which describe how an internal or external change can be achieved. It is a modeling technology, which studies steps the person goes through to achieve a particular result, and outlines the steps which anyone may follow to produce that result.

How is NLP Used?

NLP is used for improving internal communications, which mostly occur at the subconscious level, and external communications, such as transaction between friends, family members, or business people.

One of my favorite NLP tools is Time Line Therapy, a technique used to uncover and resolve the cause of an emotional response you want to change. In Time Line Therapy you trace back, step by step, from the currently occuring situation/problem to the root of the problem: the circumstance which originally caused it. Along the way you make surprising connections - things in your experience which you hadn't realized were related. This connection allows you to uncover and resolve the issue behind the behavior in a very streamlined way.

NLP, unlike behavior modification, is used to add resources to resourceless states. It presupposes that the subconscious mind always makes the best choice available. Although the behavior a person exhibits may be extremely undesirable or offensive to others, he/she cannot improve his/her behavior until he/she have access to a new and better choice. It may seem that the person could make a better choice, but for some unknown reason - unknown to the observer, and often unknown to the person exhibiting the behavior - that better choice is not truly available to him/her. People often say, "I wouldn't do that if I were him/her." Not true. If you were that person, you would do exactly what that person did. You would only have that person's inner resources. On the other hand, if that other person were you, he/she might make the wonderful choice you believe you would make in the same situation.

Adding resources to resourceless states speeds up change process by

  • uncovering the source of the problem in a streamlined way

  • circumventing the need to figure out why what wasn't working wasn't working - just try different things until you find something that works

  • eliminating the resistance and fear which occurs when you try to take something away from someone - even an old undesired behavior. (If you want to get a dog to drop an old raggged bone, offer him a piece of meat!) Rather than trying to remove or alter the old behavior, you simply add a new choice.

How can I find out More about NLP?

There are many wonderful books which explain in greater detail what NLP is and how it can be used. The first one I read is Frogs into Princes: Neuro Linguistic Programming by Richard Bandler. It is humorous, informative, and a bit hard to follow at times, since it was transcribed from lectures. Still, it is well worth the investment of time and money.

My other favorite is Influencing With Integrity by Genie Laborde. It is well organized, straightforward, and gives highly useful information. It explains numerous NLP techniques in ways that you can easily understand and use them. Though the book is designed to improve communication in business transactions the techniques apply to personal communications as well.
