PLANT PROFILE
Passion Vines in Central Florida

Passion flower, Passiflora incarnata

Leaves: Finely toothed, deeply (three - five) lobed, 2 1/2" wide - 6" long, with glandular petioles.
Flower: Sepals white, petals bluish-white, with a lavender, fringed corona of blue-purple, banded with purple, 4" diameter, spring summer & fall bloom.
Fruit: Large, (3") edible, egg shaped fruit, yellowish at maturity.
Habit: A perennial vine climbing by tendrils, but generally growing prostrate.
Habitat: Grows in the full sun of open woods & old fields. Found throughout the state.


Yellow maypop, Passiflora lutea

Leaves: Entire, wider than long, with shallow lobes (3/4" - 4" wide). Stems are remotely to densely pilose, & petioles are without glands.
Flower: Small, sepals are green, petals are yellow-green, 1/2" to 3/4" diameter. Blooms in spring, summer, & fall.
Fruit: Small, edible berries, 3/8", green turning to black at maturity.
Habit: A perennial vine climbing by tendrils.
Habitat: Grows in the part shade of woodlands. Found in northern Florida south to Hernando & Lake Counties.


Corky stem passion vine, Passiflora suberosa

Leaves: May be entire to three lobed, 1 1/2" to 4" in length. Stem becoming woody, & winged with maturity. Petioles glandular.
Flower: The sepals are long & greenish white and resemble petals, which are absent. Blooming all year.
Fruit: Small, edible berries, 3/8", green turning to purple-black at maturity.
Habit: Perennial vine climbing by tendrils.
Habitat: Grows in the part shade of hammocks & shell middens Found in the central & southern peninsula of Florida
