Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of creative
alternatives for responding to conflict -- alternatives to passive or aggressive
responses, alternatives to violence. Peace demands the most heroic labor and the most difficult sacrifice.
It demands greater heroism than war. It demands If the human race wishes to have a prolonged and indefinite period
of material prosperity, they have only got to behave in a peaceful and helpful way
toward one another. We must be prepared to make heroic sacrifices for the cause of
peace that we make ungrudgingly for the cause of war. There is no task that is more
important or closer to my heart. Peace, like charity, begins at home. If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with
your enemy. Then he becomes your partner. A rattlesnake, if cornered, will become so angry it will bite itself.
That is exactly what the harboring of hate and resentment against others is -- a
biting of oneself. We think we are harming others in holding these spites and hates,
but the deeper harm is to ourselves. |
